Dear Mrs. Boutilier:

For my capstone project I am going to tutor people for the citizenship exam. I am working with the Hartford Public Library at the American Place, they help tutor people for the citizenship exam. Due to the pandemic many of the libraries are closed so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to do it in person, but I’m sure I'll do the majority of my tutoring online. Since I know that the process to take the citizenship exam is hard, I at least want to help people study so that they don’t have to go through the same process if they fail. This year the citizenship exam is changing, the exam will have 100 questions and you need to answer 10 questions, to pass you need to answer a minimum of 6 questions to pass. I will have to prepare myself for those new questions. I also need to create a 15 minute presentation on the path to citizenship and present it to my classmates.

My research question is the difficult process that people go through to take the citizenship exam. Since my dad recently took the citizenship exam, I know that it involves a lot of time, money and paperwork. I want to research that topic so I can help people understand what happens if they fail and what process they need to go through to take the exam again. For my artifacts I am going to take pictures of the emails, pictures of the tutoring sessions, and letters of the people I am working with. With consent of course

Right now it looks like Nancy Caddigan is going to be my mentor. She is the executive director of the American Place. We have spoken through the phone and through email, I have also sent her my resume and availability. My learning stretch would be to make sure that the people I help tutor do well on the citizenship exam. Since there will be different people with varying command of the English language, I will do my best to tutor them as much as possible for when they take the test. Since I know how to speak Spanish I’m sure I’ll be able to help a majority of the people trying to take the exam, but it is going to be a little difficult for me to tutor people who speak another language other than Spanish. I’ll try to do my best to help the people in need.

Sincerely,

Eidhan Santana
